The operator at the call center and the Queens Blvd. traffic
noise were doing battle with each other, while I desperately attempted to get
directions to the storage company, supposedly only a few blocks away. In exasperation I decided, “FORGET IT, “ and
wished I could have slammed down the receiver, but on a cell phone, there isn’t
one. “The red building should be on your right, and the college on the left,”
the operator insisted. “Impossible! Something’s wrong here, the red building’s
on the left and behind me which leads me back to where I just came from and
there’s no storage company in that direction.” The operator repeated, “I’m looking at your location and all
you have to do is turn around.” I turned around, saw no red building in sight
and gave up exhausted. After walking in circles, asking others who seemed to be
just as lost, thanks to a UPS truck driver who knew the area, I found my way a
few minutes later. With clear directions, I discovered Starr Street, a tiny
alley way hidden from view. I arrived at my destination, wondering why getting
there had been so difficult, given the call center should have been able to
direct me. Heading back home that evening, while the sun descended in the sky, I
clearly saw the culprit. Two different buildings of a red hue were the problem.
One building I would have considered to be...pale pink, while the other, clearly red, but
seen from a call center on a computer screen in Georgia must have looked
completely different than standing on a bustling New York city street corner!
